When most people
think of race they think of color or even a certain stereotype. In terms of
Wood's definition of race, he calls it "a primary aspect of personal
identity." I partially agree with this statement, but do not feel like it
is the primary aspect of someone’s character. No single characteristic or trait
can fully describe someone; for example, in ancient societies, they did not separate
people according to their physical differences, but according to their social
class, religion, and even language. Knowing the majority of people use race to
describe someone, it can also be used in a negative aspect these days, hence
why I do not believe it is the best way to categorize or group specific
populations. Since many people come from a variety of backgrounds nowadays, I
do believe that the Census Bureau should allow people to check multiple boxes
to identify themselves. If you were a mixture of many nationalities and had to classify
yourself as one or two, would you be insulted?
